The word Naturopathy is developed from Latin word “Natura” and Greek word “Pathos”. Natura means Nature or Natural Processes and Pathos means Suffering or Diseases. So Naturopathy word meaning is Treating Diseases with Natural Healing Processes.

Founder and Father of Naturopathy

Nature Cure started about 180 years ago from now by a farmer physician naturopath – Vincent Priessnitz.

Nature Cure originated in a small village called Grafenberg located in Silelsian Mountains. Silelsian is a historical region of Central Europe that lies mostly within Poland, with small parts in the Czech Republic and Germany.

In 1895 John Scheel coined the term “Naturopathy” before that it was called Nature Cure.

Dr. Benedict Lust is considered as the Founder and Father of Modern Naturopathy. Because of his contributions and efforts he put for the growth of naturopathy. In 1902 he also opend the 1st Naturopathy Educating Institute in the New York City: American School of Naturopathy.

Internation Naturopathy Day is celebrated on November 18th every year.

The 1st International Naturopathy Day was celebrated on November 18, 2018.

This day celebration is started by the Ministry of AYUSH in India for the promotion of drugless system of medicine: Naturopathy. Also to raise the awareness about naturopathy.

This day 18th November is choosen to honor Mahatma Gandhi Ji contributions for Naturopathy.

Why 18th November is choosen specifically for naturopathy day celebration? It is choosen because on 18th November, 1918, Mahatma Gandhi Ji for the first time joined the Nature Cure Foundation Trust and Became a life time member of it. That’s why Gandhi Ji considered as founder and father of Naturopathy.

Ofcourse “YES” Naturopaths can use Dr in front of their names like other BAMS, MBBS, or BHMS doctors use. But only by those naturopaths who pursue BNYS degree course from a Government Recognized University. For example: in M.P. India, Sant Hirdaram Medical College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (SHMCNYS) Affiliated to MPMSU (Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University) Jabalpur [Government University] provides BNYS degree.

Note: There are some institutions which are providing BNYS degree and they are not affiliated to any Government Recognized University so please be aware of such institutions. Always check your Institution details and they should be available on UGC or UGC Recognised University.

Liscense in Naturopathy

There are 3 types of Naturopathy liscense available at present

  1. Naturopathy Practicing Liscense (State)
  2. Naturopathy Practicing Liscense (National)
  3. Clinical Establishment Liscense (For open Naturopathy Clinic or Hospital)

1. Naturopathy Practicing Liscense (State)

This is a permanent registration liscense of a naturopathy doctor issued by the respective AYUSH department of that state government in which the naturopathy college is established.

If you studied in other state and live in some other state then you can take NOC (No Objection Certificate) form AYUSH department of that state and can apply for licence in your home state.

For example: You live in Rajasthan and have taken admission in a Naturopathy College in Madhya Pradesh. After completion of your BNYS course, you can take NOC from AYUSH department of Madhya Pradesh and can submit it in Rajasthan AYUSH department for Permanent state registration in Rajasthan.

Note: Some people might think can they have permanent registration in both states, like in Madhya Pradesh as they have studied there and in Rajasthan also as they live there. So my dear friend this is not possible you only get registered in single state. Either you will get registered in Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan not both.

2. Naturopathy Practicing Liscense (National)

Now naturopathy doctors can apply for National Registration. With National Registration they can practice in any state of India.

Note: National Registration is different from state registration. State Registration is compulsory and in National Registration you have your own choice if you want you can or if you don’t you can avoid.

It is good for those who want to practice in other states or regularly switch their jobs in different states.

If you practice in your registered state and not planing to practice in other state then there is no immediate need for national registration. But you can apply and take it for future perspective.
