Key Highlights of Naturopathy’s Growth in The Gambia

Highlights:-

Bridging Traditional and Modern Healing

Before naturopathy was formally introduced, The Gambia already had a well-established tradition of herbal and spiritual healing. Recognizing the potential of naturopathy, Prof. Nyarkotey collaborated with the Traditional Healers Association of The Gambia (TRAHASS) and introduced them to naturopathic education.

Educating Traditional Healers

To strengthen naturopathy, Prof. Nyarkotey organized a short naturopathy training program and provided scholarships to local traditional healers. The first batch of nine healers graduated, and some went on to enroll in an online degree program in naturopathy.

The First Traditional and Alternative Medicine Conference

In an effort to bring traditional healers and naturopaths together, The Gambia’s first-ever Traditional and Alternative Medicine Conference was held at Gambia College, Brikama. This historic event increased public awareness and strengthened the community of healers.

Advocacy and Awareness

During his stay, Prof. Nyarkotey wrote several educational articles in newspapers and engaged in campaigns to promote naturopathy. His advocacy led to increased public interest, recognition from scholars, and even a formal meeting with The Gambia’s Minister of Health to discuss legislative support for traditional and alternative medicine.

Becoming Africa’s First Naturopathic Lawyer

In November 2024, Prof. Nyarkotey made history by becoming Africa’s first naturopath to qualify as a lawyer. His achievement brought legal recognition to naturopathy and strengthened the movement for traditional medicine in The Gambia.

Naturopaths in Clinical Practice

A major milestone was achieved when naturopathic students were allowed to do clinical training in hospitals. This was approved by the Department of Traditional Medicine Programs, marking the official integration of naturopathy into The Gambia’s healthcare system.

Government Recognition & Presidential Support

On February 11, 2025, The Gambia’s President Adama Barrow invited naturopaths and traditional healers to the State House to discuss the role of natural medicine and the need for legislation. This was a groundbreaking moment, as it showed government support for naturopathy.

Formation of The Gambia Society of Naturopathy (GSN)

To ensure the continuous growth of naturopathy, The Gambia Society of Naturopathy (GSN) was established to promote training, research, and professional standards in the field.

The Future of Naturopathy in The Gambia

With strong advocacy and government support, The Gambia is moving towards:

  • Legal recognition and regulation of naturopathy
  • Expanded naturopathic education and training
  • More naturopaths in hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Increased research and development in natural medicine
